Meaning of Literary Argument
Reader alert! At first glance, the term literary argument may call up visions of a spirited confrontation between readers debating whether Willie Loman in Death of a Salesman suffers more intensely than, say, Bigger Thomas in Native Son. But, no, the argument you are expected to write is not a war of words. Rather, it is a literary analysis of a novel or play of your choice. Your analysis will focus on a character, a set of circumstances, a setting, or some other specified feature of a novel or play.
Here is a typical essay prompt:
Write an essay about a novel or play in which a character faces competing desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences. Identify the conflicting forces and explain how the conflict contributes to the meaning of the work as a whole.
